First and foremost, thanks for visiting our blog! We wanted to take a few minutes to explain who we are and the topics you can expect to see here. Our names are Kimberly Tice and Venita Litvack. We are two certified superheroes, or the more accurate terminology, speech language pathologists. (Trust us- Spend a few years helping to give people the power to communicate and tell us if you don't feel somewhat heroic on a daily basis!)
We are both extremely passionate about our field. Many times people hear the term speech therapy and assume our job is to help children articulate their sounds properly. While this is a part of our job, we work on so much more! Any sort of communication issue can fall under the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) umbrella. This involves issues with understanding language, expressing oneself, sentence structure, social skills to name a few. Other branches of our field people often aren't familiar with include feeding therapy or literacy skills. All these topics listed above are the sorts of article content you can expect to find posts on here.
Back in 2015, we spent a lot of time writing individualized social stories for our clients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). These stories included suggested behaviors and information on new settings so that our kiddos in therapy could understand what to expect and how to behave in a variety of different places. Many teachers, parents, and therapists formulate social stories to help children adapt to situations that cause anxiety. We found ourselves wondering why no one had ever published a social book series for kiddos with or without autism that could use some information about expected behaviors in different settings. This is a more common problem than you might think. Consider how different ones social behavior is at a supermarket, a birthday party, a library, or even a funeral. How can we expect kiddos to understand these social nuances if we do not teach them? And so our company, Sociability Books was born! Shortly after, our first series, Lou Knows What to Do was created. We are so excited to share it with the world this summer! The first book will be released in a few weeks...August 2017.
That brings us back to this blog. We wanted to share more besides our books, but also our passion for the field. So here we are! If you are interested in learning about tips for increasing language and general communication skills, you've come to the right place. We will be sharing ideas for activities and sometimes our general thoughts on topics related to communication. Thanks for visiting us and we hope you come along on the journey!
